How You Can Pick Up Clues from Facebook Insights

You already have all the clues you need. You just need to find them.

So head on over to your Facebook Insights, and check out all your posts for the last month.

You’re going to want to sort them by the largest reach. (Reach is the number of unique people who have seen your post in the past 28 days)

Then, take notes on the following items:

  1. Topic
  2. Day
  3. Time of Day
  4. Type of Update
  5. People Talking About This

Once you’ve done that, sort all of your posts by the lowest reach. You should now be looking at the least popular posts for the last month. Take notes on the exact same items above.

Let’s look at a real example so it will make more sense.

What Travel Customers Love & Hate

I just did this exercise with a client recently. I went through Facebook Insights, and took notes on the patterns I picked up on. Most of the time they’re easy to spot.

Here are some things we learned about travel customers last month.

  • People like personal questions. Most of the popular posts had specific questions like, “Do you think…”, or “How do you feel…”.
  • People like discussing and sharing their plans for fun/exciting events like vacations and holidays. People loved sharing their plans for the holidays. It doesn’t matter if they were staying home or going to the Bahamas. These plans touched an emotional nerve (get to see family, spend time with loved ones, get to skip work) and people had strong feelings.
  • People like to save money. For us regular folk, this should be a no-brainer. The only exception is if you have a brand/product that caters to the high-end. For example, if you’re in the market for a private, custom yacht, chances are you’re not really interested in pinching pennies.
  • People like discussing kids. Again, people enjoy discussing topics they have an emotional connection with. Even if you poke fun teasingly and ask them “how they survive long car rides with their kids”. It still evokes a response, and people like sharing their sarcastic remarks.
  • The biggest reach for posts are usually Monday – Thursday, around 7:00pm and between 11:00 – 2:00. Your audience will respond more on certain days of the week, and specific times during the day. You should try to identify these time blocks quickly so you can expose your content to the most fans possible.

(Pro Tip: If you look at your website analytics, you’ll also usually find a correlation between referral traffic from Facebook, and the reach or engagement of each post).

Now, let’s find out what people didn’t like. Try to identify specifically what turned people off, or prevented them from responding.

  • Self-promotion: People don’t like when you self-promote. Why? Because people only care about themselves. Harsh, but true.
  • Hyperbole: Strong words and capitalization like, “YOU CAN’T MISS THIS…” may work once or twice. But it will eventually turn people off. They’ll either ignore you, or just unfriend you.
  • Vague Questions: Although people like questions, they don’t like vague questions. So make sure you use conrete questions about specific topics.
  • Posting During Off Hours: Although posting during off-peak hours can help you, it can also land on deaf ears. When you’re experimenting to find time slots, you may notice that some messages have drastically low reach. That may not have anything to do with the topic, but rather with the time you sent it out.

Everyone’s results will be a little different. It depends a lot on your audience, your product/service, and your industry.

But these examples should help you analyze your own results and show you what to look for.

Now the key is to take these clues, and apply them to our top secret formula.

The Secret Formula to Dominating Facebook Marketing

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for.

The top secret “social media formula” that you can’t find anywhere else.

I’ll finally reveal it, just for you.

Do more of what your fans like, and less of what they don’t like.

Yes, that’s it. Pretty surprising, huh? 🙂

The key to dominating Facebook marketing is to virally grow your page. That means exposing your content to more “friends of fans”.

And if you want to virally grow your page, then you need to increase engagement. You might want to partner with a marketing company that offers Facebook Marketing packages like SocialAppsHQ to boost your engagement on this platform.

You increase engagement by doing more of what people like, and less of what people don’t.

Come to think of it, that sounds like good business advice too.

If you want succeed, then you need to sell happiness.
