1. Optimize your Title Tag

Optimizing your page or post title tag is one of the most important onpage SEO steps.

Ideally, you want to have your keyphrase at the beginning of your title.

For example, the title of this post is:

And my target keyphrase is quick SEO.

You should also make sure that your title appears before your sitename. Here is how your page’s title tag should look:

Title | Sitename

If you’re targeting a competitive keyphrase (let’s face it, most sites are), then you should also optimize your website’s title tag.

That would look like this:

Target Keyphrase | Sitename

2. Create a Flat Site Architecture

Your website architecture refers to the organization of your individual webpages.

When you’re organizing your website, it’s important to make it as flat as possible.

(That just means avoid burying your pages.)

A good rule of thumb is to make sure your most important pages are less than 3 links from the homepage.

You can fix this by simply adding some extra navigation or additional internal links.

3. Make Sure you Have a Clean URL Structure

Your URL structure should also be clean.

That means simple, free from extra strings or paramters and including keyphrases where appropriate.

If you’re using WordPress, then you can change your Permalinks by looking under the Settings section.

Then change the Permalinks settings to “Custom”, and add this:

/%postname%/

For example, the URL of this post is:

Please note that changing your permalink structure for an established site isn’t recommended. It will change all of your URLs and you will lose all of your links (and SEO value).
